Oscar Arias Sanchez

The current President of Costa Rica and recipient of the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize during his previous Presidency of that Country from 1986-1990, Oscar Arias is a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, demilitarization and the developing world. In 1986, Arias was elected president of Costa Rica and in 1987 he formulated a plan to end the violence in Central America. His initiative culminated in the signing of the Procedure to Establish a Firm and Lasting Peace in Central America by all the Central American presidents. In 1988, Arias furthered his vision of democracy and non-violence by founding the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress.
